Other books...

Since we're beginning to talk about other series, here's a post for you to discuss other good books you've read. Make sure you tell us WHY they are so good.

  1. I seriously recommend the Star Wars: Legacy of the Force series, because its about twenty-some years into the star wars future and there's way more conflict after the movies than in them. It's a totally awesome series.

  3. i recommend Kiss Me Kill Me by Lauren Henderson. if you like romance with a twist of suspense

  4. I'll be showing the original Star Wars movie (number 1, or number 4, depending upon how you look at it) for my Epic Movies class. It's amazing how, for the time, it was a theatrical and special effects wonder--but compared to what we have now, it's almost disappointing!

  5. I love Stolen Children by Peg Kehret! Even though it's a short read it's still really good!

  6. a really good series that i've read is The secrets of the immortal Nicholas Flamel by Michael Scott. Its about these twins (Sophie and Josh) who find out that the owner of the bookshop josh works at is actually a 600 year old alchemyst. They also find out that there is a bad guy (John Dee) who works for the "Dark Elders" who wants to bring them back, which could possibly wipe out all of humanity.

  7. If you like "sci fi" stories [meaning alternate future-type stories], The Giver, Gathering Blue, and The Messenger are a good trilogy. I also reccomend just about any novel by Ray Bradbury.

  12. "The Poe guy"....? You mean Edgar Alan Poe? ["The Raven" = <3 <3 <3]

Ilsa- yay to reading The Giver and Gathering Blue! Why not the final book, too?

  13. Another good series I'd recommend is the shadow children series, because it takes place in an alternate universe where families are only allowed to have two children and all third children are to be disowned and that's how they become shadow chilldren. My sister recommended it to me and it sounded super epic.

  14. i agree with Alana, Stolen Children is a great book even though it is short

  15. Who is the author of the Shadow Children books?

    ReplyDelete
  16. i love the Giver! We actually had to read in 7 th grade, tho i read it in 5th or 6th grade. I've read some other of lois lowry's books too, like number the stars and gossamer. they were all really good!

  18. You guys have a great list going here! My favorites would include To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, and Fahrenheit 451. If you're a book lover (which you all are!) you definitely need to read Fahrenheit 451. Gives you some perspective.

  21. I would recommend the GONE series by Michael Grant.....this is what the back of the book says....The blast nearly missed Sam. It passed his head with a whoosh and hit the wall behind him. It was like napalm, jellied gasoline, liquid fire that stuck to the wall where it hit and burned with mad intensity. For a second he could only stare, forzen in amazement. Insane. Impossible. The little girl cried out in terror and raised her hands again. This time she wouldn't miss. This time she would kill him.

This is what the front flap says..... In the blink of an eye. Everyone disappears. GONE. Except for the young. Teens. Middle schoolers. Toddlers. But not a single adult. No teacher, no cops, no doctors, no parents. Just as suddenly, there are no phones, no internet, no television. No way to figure out whats happened. And no way to get help.
Hunger threatens. Bullies rule. A sinister creature lurks. Animals are mutating. And the teens themselves are changing, developing new talents-- unimaginable, dangerous, deadly powers-- that grow stronger by the day.
It's a terrifying new world. Sides are being chosen, a fight is shping up. Townies against rich kids. Bullies against the weak. Powerful against powerless. And time is running out: On your birthday, you will disappear like everyone else.

This is an amazing book that I have read and plan on reading again. It was SOOOOO good.

  22. Gone sounds almost...scary. I mean--to think about life if that were to happen, you know? There used to be a tv show called Jeremiah, and it was the same sort of premise. No one lived through some sort of biological destruction except for people under 18 (I think it was. Maybe it was 16.) The series flashed forward about ten years to show how they had attempted to build the world back up.

  27. i think i might read the gone series too

    ReplyDelete
  28. btw, the books are gone, hunger, and lies

  29. Oh! I almost forgot. Don't be afraid of Shakespeare, people: Richard III is one of my favorites. You have an angry, bitter, malformed man who will stop at nothing (and I mean nothing) to become the king.

(And if you ever need help deciphering some of Shakespeare's most popular plays, google "No Fear Shakespeare.")

  30. I love Percy jackson and the olympians!! the whole series is good! the books are kinda short though

    ReplyDelete
  31. AND the UGLIES series by Scott Westerfeld is really good. I'm still reading it but I'm on the 3rd book and they have all been very good reads.

In a world of extreme beauty, anyone normal is ugly.

  34. Oh yeah! I totally forgot about Percy Jackson... I read those with my mom and brother... Those are great!!

I've read the first 3 of the Uglies books, but I didn't know until this summer that Extras was a part of the series.

  35. My all time favorite series is one that i have yet to find another person who has read them, but is really good! It's called the stravaganza series. the fifth book just came out today. The books are: City of Masks, City of Stars, City of Flowers, City of secrets, and City of Ships.

Basically, the series is about (british) kids Who "stravagate" to this place called "Talia" in their sleep. Talia is sort of a renassaince italy. There's this evil family called the Di Chimici that wants to figure out the secrets of the stravagante
    They are by Mary Hoffman

  36. The Peaches Series is really good too. It is about 3 girls from the same town and they all have very different backgrounds. They grow to become best friends. It is all about their relationships with each other and others while working on the Darlington farm in Georgia for the summer.
The series is peaches, secrets of peaches, and love and peahces

  37. percy jackson series are soo good i finished the first book in 1 day

    ReplyDelete
  38. i love the uglies series and Percy Jackson!

  39. THe Maximum ride series is good, im rereading the second one.
Theyre about this family of mutants, as in avian-human hybrids(bird-human/ they have wings), who are in this ongoing fight against a lupin-human hybrid called erasers. Like no matter where they are, they don't trust anybody because the 'erasers' can change between looking human and looking like erasers.
    its cool :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. I second Erin's recommendation for the Maximum ride series. Good stuff--it sounds weird, but it's another one of those books (like Hunger Games, I think) that sucks you into the plot and, after you finish the first one, makes you wish you had the second in the series in your possession!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I third that. I read the first four and they are AWESOME! If I owned them, I would be reading all of them cover to cover daily. Unfortunately, I don't own them, so I can't do that. :P

    ReplyDelete
  42. precy jackson is good i love those books they sound kinda dumb but they're really goood!

    ReplyDelete
  43. The back of the second maximum ride says:
Fang, Iggy, Nudge, Gasman, Angel, and Maximum Ride(shes a girl btw): Six incredible kids with the ability to fly, free as birds... until Max and her gang are discovered by an FBI agent and forced to face their worst nightmare. You guessed it- school. That is, the abominable place where they learn everything except how to survive as winged fugitives relentlessly hunted by killers...

    ReplyDelete
  44. i loved the first three books in the maximum ride series, but after the fourth one the kind of went... downhill.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I can't wait to read the Maximum Ride series :) My little brother read one for his bookclub, but I was too busy at the time to read it with him :\ I have so many books to read this summer x.x X)

A book I've read several times is called The Witch Doll. I'm still not quite sure why I liked it so much, though... It was just an adventure each time. It's about it's almost like a folk tale... but not exactly. Somehow this woman gets trapped in the body of a doll, and she switches places with her caretaker. A young girl finds the doll, and she turns her back to a somewhat-human state.
It's not a very long book... but it's worth reading. I hope I made sense xp

    ReplyDelete
  46. haha when i read the first MR book, it took me a while to realize Max was a girl.

    ReplyDelete
  47. Me too Alysse! Thought it was kind of cool that she was a girl.

  50. I'm with Ilsa. Harry Potter is one of the best imagined series I've ever come across.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I had this crazy harry potter obsession in 4th grade!! i even dressed up and went to that hogwarts thing by the zoo it was hilarious!! I had dreams about harry potter haha!

    ReplyDelete
  52. A good non sci-fi book you might like is It's Kind of a Funny Story. I forget who the author is, but it is awesome!
It's about this one kid who gets depressed and gets help in a hospital. It's really a good book. There are a lot of hilarious things in it. There's a lot of semi-mature content in it, but it's still a good read.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Alana- there are a lot of classics to choose from... at the Peoria Barnes and Noble, there's a table full of them if you want to browse.

    ReplyDelete
  54. i know a lot of good books that aren't sci fi (tho most of them are fantasy, which is sort of similair) i have a few that i already maentioned, but another really good series is the unicorn chronicles (by bruce coville). Chronicles of Faerie is also really good (by O.R. Melling)

  65. Kiss Me Kill Me is a really good book the back says
When Scarlett Wakefield transfers from St. Tabbys, a posh private school outside London, to Wakefield Hall Collegiate, the world-renowed prep school that her grandmother runs in the English countryside, she is relieved that no one knows her dark, haunting secret.
A few months ago Plum Saybourne, the queen of St. Tabbys "Smart Set", surprisingly invited Scarlett to an elite party with a guest list full of the hottest names in the British society, including Dan McAndrew, Scarlett's secret crush. Before the party, Scarlett had only imagined what it would be like to have her first kiss with Dan, but on the penhouse terrace, Dan leaned in close and she no longer had to wonder . Their kiss was beautiful and perfect and magical, and then....
Dan McAndrew suffocated in her arms.
No one knows how and why Dan died, and everyone at St. Tabbys believes Scarlett had something to do with it. After all, she was the last person to see Dan alive. But now that she's safely hidden away at Wakefield Hall, Scarlett would rather forget that it ever happened.
Only she can't. Especially when she receives an anonymous note that will set her on her path to clearing her name and finding out what really happened to the first and last boy she kissed.
its a really good book so far. i love it

  67. Life as We Knew It is an AWESOME book, too. I just finished reading it for the second time. In 2009, it was a Rebgecca Caudill nominee, so I read it for school. But I ended up liking A LOT!

Here's what the inside flap says:
When Miranda first hears the warnings that a meteor is heading on a collision path with the moon, they just sound like an excuse fir extra homework assignments. But her disbelief turns into fear in a split second as the entire world witnesses a lunar impact that knocks the moon closer in orbit, catastrophically altering the earth's climate.
Everything else in Miranda's life fades away as supermarkets run out of food, gas goes up to more than ten dollars a gallon, and school is closed indefinitely.
But what Miranda and her family don't realize is that the worst is yet to come.
Told in Miranda's diary entries, this is a heart-pounding account of her struggle to hold on to the most important resource of all-hope-in an increasingly desperate and unfamiliar time.

I am going to start the sequel, The Dead and the Gone, right now.... BYE!!
